HOW TO MEASURE PLASTIC BAGS

CAN LINERS - ROUND or RECTANGLE or  SQUARE

POLY BAGS most common styles

FOR A ROUND CONTAINER:

cIRCUMFERENCE - dIAMETER X 3.14

1)  mULTIPLY THE DIAMETER OF THE CONTAINER BY 3.14.  this EQUALS THE CIRCUMFERENCE OF THE BAG.  DIVIDE BY 2 TO GET THE FLAT WIDTH.  ADD 1 INCH TO THE FLAT WIDTH FOR A LOOSER FIT.

2)  MEASURE THE LENGTH OF THE CONTAINER.  ADD 1/2 THE DIAMETER TO THE LENGTH OF THE CONTAINER.  ADD 4 INCHES TO THIS TOTAL FOR OVERHANG.  THIS IS THE TOTAL LENGTH OF THE BAG NEEDED.

FOR A SQUARE OR RECTANGULAR CONTAINER:

1)  ADD UP THE WIDTH OF TWO ADJACENT SIDES.  ADD 1 INCH TO THIS VALUE FOR A LOOSER FIT.  THIS VALUE EQUALS THE FLAT WIDTH OF THE NEEDED BAG.
2)  MEASURE THE LENGTH OF THE CONTAINER AND ADD TO THIS VALUE 1/2 OF THE SHORTEST SIDE.  ADD ANOTHER 5 INCHES TO THIS VALUE FOR OVERHANG AND THIS VALUE EQUALS THE LENGTH OF THE BAG.  If tying a bag rather than lining a box, add length of the shortest side to the bag length determined by step # 2.

choosing the right mil thickness:

1 or 1.25 mil bags are perfect for economical packaging and coverage of light weight products.

1.5 and 2 mil bags are the most commonly used thickness  for storing, shipping, or displaying everyday items.

Heavy Duty 3 mil and extra heavy 4 mil bags are capable of protecting and supporting heavy and abrasive items.

6 mil bags are extremely tough offering great protection for heavy products.

Poly termonology:

Amine Free Pink Anti-Static: These bags provide anti-static protection with a negligible presence of amines when compared with traditional pint anti-static.  They function in low relative humidity. so they don't need to draw as much moisture from the air to be effective against static charges, and they won't corrode polycarbonate surfaces
Black Conductive: These bags and film are produced with a carbon black additive to provide protection for sensitive electronic devices or to line containers where explosive materials are stored.  Unlike traditional and non-amine films, black conductive films are humidity independent, so they require no humidity to remain effective.  They also offer a virtually unlimited shelf life and excellent corrosion resistance, and will not contaminate products with which they come in contact.
Flat Bag Dimensions: For each lay flat bag, there are three dimensions.  The first measurement is the width across the opening of the bag.  The length runs from the bag opening to the base of the bag.  Gauge, the third figure in a bag/s dimensions, is a measure of its thickness expressed in mils.
Gusseted Dimensions: The width measures across the opening of the bag.  The depth is the fully extended gusset.  The length runs form the opening to the bottom, and the final dimension is the gauge (thickness).
High Density Polyethylene- HDPE: commonly used in merchandise bags, grocery bags and garbage bags.  It has excellent weather/tension/heat resistance.  Has a tendency to stretch from excess product weight.
Low Density Polyethylene- LDPE: Polyethylene (PE) is the material used over half of all films today, and low density polyethylene (LDPE) is the source of most poly bags.  LDPE has great tensile strength, clarity, flexibility, and water barrier properties.  It is also resistant to most caustic compounds.
Markable Bag: Parts bags, and bags with white block for marking, and ideal for organizing and displaying products.  Three mil bags can handle even the toughest parts.
Pink Anti-Static: The traditional protective film for packaging static sensitive and non-static sensitive components where electrostatic contamination is a problem.
Transparent Metallic Static Shielding Bags: Total Faraday Cage protection and visibility for highly sensitive electronic components.  Guard against static charge from both inside and outside with three layers of anti-static protection.  50% transparent for easy product identification.  This bag is buried metal construction; a conductive aluminum shield layer is buried between 2 static dissipative polymeric plastic layers.
